Working towards a sustainable and healthy lifestyle on my own chunk of land. Learning to grow and prepare healthy food for ourselves, our friends, and our family in London Ontario, Canada.
Are you doing square foot? You may consider doing 4 food square for your zucchini and pumpkin, but only the small one foot for things like kale. Even with a vertical frame, pumpkin is going to take a lot of room. And zucchini doesn't climb. I typically don't include squash family in my square food area.
You see the hashie looking bit at the top? It's my poorly drawn vertical supports. Gonna make those pumpkin & zucchini climb. I do have a zucchini in another bed sprawling and I'm gonna compare the harvest to decide which method works best in our yard/with our temperaments/etc. :)
This upcoming year is mostly a year of experiments.
You'll probably still need more space. Even if it's just an extra square foot each. Zucchini doesn't climb by nature, you'll have to tie it up. And pumpkins are big!! It's not unheard of to have a pumpkin fruit that's 1 square foot.
I will be posting the full plan with links to the seeds and other research sites when planning is done. Right now it's like trying to explain why you painted the dog in the tree when the rest of the painting isn't done.

ReplyDeleteI know I'll have to tie the zucchini to make it climb, that's why we're having a sprawling one for comparison.
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkins we're growing are the little sweet pie type(only about 7" wide according to the seed site) and they'll be 3-6 feet in the air.
Just leave me my foolishness for now and you can laugh at me later k? :)
